A piece that reconstructs the essential apron of atelier work into a styling garment. Originally intended to protect clothing and carry frequently used sewing tools, the apron here is reimagined as both functional equipment and fashion object. Designed around the utility that designer Toru Fujimoto personally requires in atelier work, the piece evolves from a wrap-skirt prototype he developed himself. As the second installment of the Utility Kilt series, it inherits details from MINUS’s signature cargo pants while introducing greater daily practicality. Material: richly shadowed tannin pig leather. Though often perceived as inexpensive in Japan, pigskin is highly valued in Europe for its durability, flexibility, and breathability, and widely used by luxury leather brands. Fujimoto was drawn to this contrast in perception, leading to the development of this material. Natural scars are embraced as texture, while nail-bat processing adds further depth to the grain surface. A high-grade tannin—rarely applied to pigskin in Japan—is used, allowing the leather to be slowly and carefully finished. The beauty of aging emerges from within its roughness. Rustic edges and minimally finished DARL hardware create the brand’s signature decadent atmosphere. A product designed to be completed through use.
