This piece reinterprets a 1960s knitted jumper from a renowned leatherwear brand, drawn from designer Toru N. Fujimoto’s personal collection and reconstructed through the perspective of MINUS. Since the earliest motorcycles began taking to paved roads, jumpers are said to have served as practical and essential garments for riders. By the 1960s, young rockers had made sweaters part of the visual language of the scene. The length is cut into a cropped, boxy silhouette, carefully balanced to work both beneath a jacket and as a standalone piece. Extended ribbed cuffs allow for additional layering and create further possibilities in styling. The crew neck is set at a comfortable height, while the dropped shoulders incorporate details inspired by traditional British knitwear construction at the point where the sleeves meet the body. The shaggy knit, reminiscent of mohair, is made from high-quality polyester yarn. Despite its rich, dimensional surface, the fabric has a smooth and supple hand, with virtually none of the prickling sensation often associated with knitwear. Its easy-care nature is another defining quality of the material. In contrast to its rugged and pronounced visual character, the fabric was developed to achieve a softness and delicacy reminiscent of a cashmere blend. The piece reflects one of designer Toru N. Fujimoto’s recurring ideas: “To remove the unconscious preconceptions that exist between design and material.” Rather than allowing the inherent image of a material to dictate the design, the relationship between the two is deliberately rearranged.
