This piece pays homage to a 1950s gabardine jacket from designer Toru Fujimoto’s personal vintage collection. Originating in 1950s America, the original jacket was known for its smooth, lustrous texture and light, fluid drape, typically made from heavy rayon fabrics. Thanks to its combination of durability and lightness, it was said to be worn seamlessly by young people of the time—both as workwear and leisurewear. The Work Short Jacket reinterprets this post–World War II symbol of youthful vitality through the rustic and quiet aesthetic unique to MINUS. Just like the vintage piece owned by Fujimoto himself, the jacket features leather accents on the collar and pocket openings. The leather used is a tannin-tanned pigskin that has undergone a “nail-bat processing”, a distinctive technique that has become a key element in recent MINUS collections. Additionally, combat-inspired action pleats are placed at the elbows, evoking a subtle military spirit. The body fabric is a wool gabardine with a refined drape and gentle sheen, allowing the piece to function as a new type of tailored jacket suitable even for dress occasions. When paired with casual trousers, it evokes the authentic atmosphere of mid-century Americana. The silhouette is a cropped box shape, sculpted to enhance the body’s natural lines. A ladder stitch runs down the center back, and the leather details will develop a rich patina over time, enhancing the garment’s character with each wear. Other functional details include a minimalist front zipper and an easily accessible inner pocket.
