Starting from the PROVOKE #2 collection, MINUS introduced a new category: dresswear. In the newly released PROVOKE #3 collection, this category further explores and reconsiders what dresswear can mean in a contemporary context. The central question behind this work was simple: Where is the boundary at which people recognize something as dress? For Fujimoto, among all dresswear garments, the tailored jacket represents the ultimate uniform of men’s modern society in Japan—from the modern era to the present day. It is one of the few garments that feels almost impossible not to encounter in daily life. In terms of details, the jacket adopts a classic notch lapel, and everything from the pockets to the cutting lines follows the orthodox construction of a traditional tailored jacket. However, in this piece the structural logic of tailoring is reinterpreted through a workwear-oriented construction, creating a garment that stands precisely at the boundary between workwear and dresswear. The presence of tailoring coexists with the toughness associated with workwear. To allow the garment to record the traces of time—something traditionally avoided in tailoring—sulfur-dyed chino cloth has been used. Much like jeans or a denim jacket, this is a tailored jacket that grows and evolves with wear. The piece is also shaped through the ergonomic pattern-making often seen in recent collections, including split raglan sleeves and glove sleeves. Neither entirely a blouson nor strictly a tailored jacket, the garment reveals completely different expressions depending on styling, offering a wide range of possibilities.
