This piece begins with a 1920s dress shirt from designer Toru N.Fujimoto’s personal archive, reconstructed through the perspective of MINUS. Motorcycle culture—one of the central foundations of PROVOKE #4—and the functional construction of traditional workwear. By introducing these two elements, originally belonging to entirely different contexts, into the structure of a dress shirt, the garment explores the possibility of creating a new form of dresswear. It is one of the pieces that most clearly embodies the experimentation at the core of the collection. The conventional construction of a separate collar stand and collar has been eliminated and replaced with a reconfigured ribbon collar, redefining the classical outline of the dress shirt. Traditional buttoned cuff openings have also been removed. Instead, thumbholes are positioned directly along the seam between the sleeves and cuffs. The sleeves can be worn conventionally or extended over the hands through the thumbholes, altering both the silhouette and the character of the cuffs according to the styling. Rather than following an established shirt construction, the design proposes a new interpretation of the sleeve opening itself. MINUS’s signature ladder stitching runs along the center back. Ergonomic principles are incorporated into the patternmaking, while a split raglan construction balances a sharp outline with freedom of movement, creating a modern and dimensional silhouette. The fabric develops from the original ombré check first introduced in PROVOKE #1, now further transformed through a needle-punching process. During weaving, the yarns are intentionally kept under irregular tension, creating deliberate distortion and fluctuation within the check pattern. A motif that would ordinarily be defined by regularity appears visually unstable, producing an ambiguity absent from conventional balanced checks. Needle punching is then applied to the surface, introducing additional depth and updating the PROVOKE #1 textile into a new expression. The buttons are made from coconut, a naturally derived material. Beyond its renewable qualities, the material was selected for the subtle changes in tone, luster, and texture that emerge through continued use. Different eras and cultures. Dress and workwear. Order and distortion. By blurring the boundaries between them, the garment proposes a new interpretation of dresswear.
