This piece is reconstructed through the perspective of MINUS, taking as its starting point a 1940s open-collar shirt and work shirt from designer Toru N.Fujimoto’s personal archive. Motorcycle culture, one of the central foundations of PROVOKE #4, intersects with the functional construction of traditional workwear. By bringing these two elements together, the garment becomes one of the clearest expressions of the collection’s underlying philosophy. The chest features the distinctive “mountain pocket,” a signature detail associated with a historic workwear manufacturer. Storm cuffs, commonly found on vintage work shirts, are incorporated at the sleeves and reinterpreted as a functional yet classical detail. MINUS’s signature ladder stitching runs along the center back. The pattern is based on the classic boxy proportions of 1940s workwear, refined to function not only as a shirt but also as a lightweight outer layer. The fabric is based on the original ombré check first introduced in PROVOKE #1, further developed through a needle-punching process. During weaving, the yarns are intentionally kept under uneven tension, creating deliberate distortion and fluctuation within the check pattern. A motif that would ordinarily be defined by regularity appears visually unstable, forming an ambiguity and looseness absent from conventional balanced checks. The additional needle-punching process introduces further depth to the surface, updating the textile originally developed for PROVOKE #1 into a new expression. The buttons are made from coconut, a naturally derived material. Rather than being selected solely for its renewable properties, the material is valued for the subtle changes in tone, luster, and texture that emerge through continued use. Different eras and cultures. Function and ornament. Order and distortion. By blurring the boundaries between them, the garment proposes a new form of daily wear.
