MINUS introduces its first leather gloves, “Artisan’s Hand-stuffed.” From patternmaking through construction, the piece follows the classical structure of traditional dress gloves. MINUS’s signature ladder stitching is incorporated as a detail that embodies the attitude of the brand itself. As the name suggests, the final stage of production makes full use of the characteristics of vegetable-tanned leather. During the washing process, designer Toru N. Fujimoto personally shapes each pair by hand, molding the leather around the form of his own hands. This process transforms the typically flat construction of a dress glove into a more dimensional form, reminiscent of gloves that have been worn and broken in by bikers over many years. With continued wear, that original form gradually shifts from Fujimoto’s hands to those of the wearer. A shape created inside the atelier is passed on to another body, changing and developing a new expression through use. In this sense, the glove represents the way MINUS garments continue to evolve beyond the atelier, transformed by the people who wear them. The material is full vegetable-tanned pigskin leather produced entirely in Japan, a material that has become a recurring element in recent MINUS collections. While pigskin is often regarded as a relatively familiar leather in Japan, its durability, flexibility, and breathability make it highly suitable for a wide range of leather goods. Fujimoto was drawn to the gap between the inherent qualities of the material and the assumptions surrounding it, leading him to develop his own interpretation of pigskin leather. A high-grade tannin, rarely used for domestic pigskin, is applied through a slow and careful tanning process, creating deep tonal variation and a rich capacity for patina. The leather is then carefully skived thinner by skilled artisans. This reduces the rigidity often associated with leather gloves, allowing the material to sit naturally against the hand with a lighter, more responsive feel. Rustic edges, a recurring detail throughout MINUS leather products, combine with the strongly shadowed surface of the leather to create the brand’s characteristic sense of decay and depth. In contrast, the metal components are finished with restrained, minimal DARL treatment. From the hand of the artisan to the hand of the wearer.
