Reinterpreted through the perspective of MINUS, this piece takes as its reference a signature riders jacket from an iconic biker-wear brand. The design began by exploring the meaning of the word “SKIN.” The leather jacket is treated as a second skin covering the body, with ergonomically informed patternmaking introduced to preserve the raw character of the leather while creating a dimensional form that follows the human body. MINUS’s signature glove sleeves are incorporated at the cuffs. Their continuous line extending over the hands provides additional protection from the cold while introducing a new sense of tension to the silhouette of the riders jacket. A double zipper is used at the front. By adjusting the opening from either direction, the volume around the hem and the overall silhouette can be altered according to the styling. The material is full vegetable-tanned pigskin leather produced entirely in Japan, a recurring material throughout recent MINUS collections. Pigskin is one of the few leathers for which sourcing and production can still be completed domestically in Japan. While often regarded as a relatively familiar material in Japan, pigskin offers excellent durability, flexibility, and breathability, making it suitable for a wide range of leather goods. Designer Toru N. Fujimoto was drawn to the gap between the inherent qualities of the material and the assumptions surrounding it, leading him to begin developing his own interpretation of pigskin leather. A high-grade tannin, rarely used for domestic pigskin, is applied through a slow and careful tanning process, creating deep tonal variation and a rich capacity for patina. To further intensify the surface character, each jacket is individually treated inside the atelier using a spiked bat. The irregular marks left across the grain merge with the natural texture and imperfections of the hide, creating a raw surface unique to each piece. Rustic edges, a recurring detail throughout MINUS leather products, combine with the strongly shadowed surface of the leather to create the brand’s characteristic sense of decay and depth. An original ring button is placed at the collar, while the remaining metal components are finished with restrained DARL treatment. Raw leather and minimal hardware. By allowing these contrasting textures to coexist, a classical piece of biker wear is redrawn into a silhouette distinctively MINUS.
