Reconstructed through the perspective of MINUS, this piece takes as its reference a vintage XX model from the personal archive of designer Toru N. Fujimoto—widely regarded as one of the defining masterpieces of an iconic denim manufacturer. The pattern was extracted directly from Fujimoto’s vintage piece, preserving its original proportions and sizing while being redesigned into a contemporary R-shaped silhouette. The gently curved construction follows the line of the leg, creating distinctive tension and shadow across the leather and forming a dimensional shape unlike that of conventional straight-cut leather trousers. Because different areas of the hide are placed under varying degrees of tension, continued wear creates unique creasing, pressure marks, and patina that differ from those of conventional leather pants. One of the principles central to Fujimoto’s design practice is the idea of: “Designing the aging process itself.” This piece is one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy. Classical details derived from vintage jeans are retained throughout, while rustic leather edges shaped to evoke a flame pattern are incorporated around the knees. By allowing the irregular natural edges of the hide to become part of the design, the familiar structure of vintage denim is given the rawness and tension characteristic of MINUS. A durable button fly is paired with an adjustable back cinch, accessible rounded slit pockets, and sharply defined back pockets. The material is full vegetable-tanned pigskin leather produced entirely in Japan, a recurring material throughout recent MINUS collections. Pigskin is one of the few leathers for which sourcing and production can still be completed domestically in Japan. While often regarded as a relatively familiar material, pigskin offers excellent durability, flexibility, and breathability, making it suitable for a wide range of leather goods. Fujimoto was drawn to the gap between the inherent qualities of the material and the assumptions surrounding it, leading him to develop his own interpretation of pigskin leather. A high-grade tannin, rarely used for domestic pigskin, is applied generously through a slow and careful tanning process, creating deep tonal variation and a rich capacity for patina. To further intensify the surface character, each pair is individually treated inside the atelier using a spiked bat. The irregular marks left across the grain merge with the natural texture and imperfections of the hide, creating a surface unique to every piece. Rustic edges, a recurring detail throughout MINUS leather products, combine with the strongly shadowed surface of the leather to create the brand’s characteristic sense of decay and depth. Cotton thread is used throughout the entire construction. As the leather and stitching age at different rates, the trousers gradually develop deeper contrast, texture, and individuality through wear.
