Reconstructed through the perspective of MINUS, this piece takes as its reference a pair of jeans believed to have been released around 1965 by an iconic denim manufacturer, drawn from the personal archive of designer Toru N. Fujimoto. The pattern was extracted directly from Fujimoto’s vintage piece, preserving its original proportions and sizing while being redesigned into a contemporary R-shaped silhouette. The gently curved construction follows the line of the leg, creating distinctive shadow, tension, and dimensionality when worn. Because the leather is placed under different degrees of tension along the curved structure, the garment is also expected to develop a form of aging distinct from that of conventional straight-cut leather trousers. One of the principles central to Fujimoto’s design practice is the idea of: “Designing the aging process itself.” This piece is one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy. The waistline is constructed to evoke the appearance of a ring belt, referencing the subcultural context in which this style became increasingly visible during the 1970s. A clean, elongated slim silhouette is combined with a durable button fly, an adjustable back cinch, accessible rounded slit pockets, and sharply defined back pockets. The material is full vegetable-tanned pigskin leather produced entirely in Japan, selected for the depth of shadow and tonal variation it develops across its surface. Pigskin is often regarded as a relatively familiar or utilitarian leather in Japan, yet its durability, flexibility, and breathability have long made it suitable for a wide range of products, from bags to small leather goods. Fujimoto was drawn to the gap between the material’s inherent qualities and the preconceptions surrounding it, leading him to begin developing his own interpretation of pigskin leather. A particularly high-grade tannin, rarely used for domestic pigskin, is applied generously and the hides are slowly tanned over time, creating deep coloration and a rich capacity for patina. A specialized finish is also applied to the reverse side of the leather, allowing the lining to be eliminated entirely. This reduces the stiffness and weight often associated with leather trousers, resulting in a lighter and more immediate wearing experience that allows the character of the leather itself to be felt. Cotton thread is used throughout the entire construction. As the leather and stitching age at different rates, the garment develops increasing depth and individuality with continued wear.
