This piece reinterprets the signature work vest of a well-known workwear brand through the lens of MINUS. A leather vest that can be worn year-round is an essential item in designer Toru N.Fujimoto’s wardrobe—something he can wear from atelier work through to everyday life. He designed this piece with the intention of creating a garment that not only serves that purpose, but also more deeply embodies the worldview of MINUS. While respecting the classical details of a traditional work vest, the armholes are sharply contoured to create a refined appearance. To allow for versatility in styling, the body is cut with generous width, while a sculpted, three-dimensional pattern—rarely used in conventional workwear—ensures a clean and composed silhouette. The iconic kangaroo pocket has been reengineered with added depth at the base, resulting in a three-dimensional form with generous capacity. At the back center, MINUS’s signature ladder stitch detail is applied. The yoke features a rustic edge finish. Traditionally, this type of vest does not include a back yoke, but by introducing a Western-inspired yoke into the workwear format, Fujimoto expresses the pioneering spirit at the core of his identity. The leather used is vegetable-tanned pigskin, a material that has become a familiar presence in recent MINUS collections. Today, pigskin is arguably the only leather that can still be considered truly domestic in Japan. While often regarded as inexpensive in Japan, pigskin is highly valued in Europe for its durability, flexibility, and breathability, and is widely used in luxury bags and small leather goods. Fujimoto was drawn to this contrast in perception and began developing the material accordingly. Using an exceptionally high-grade tannin—rarely applied to pigskin in Japan—the leather is finished slowly and meticulously. Its beautiful aging over time goes without saying. To further enrich its surface character, each piece is individually treated in the atelier using a nail bat to work the grain layer by hand. Signature MINUS details such as rustic edges, along with the leather’s deep shadows and texture, create the brand’s distinctively decadent atmosphere. In contrast to the expressive leather surface, minimal dull-finished metal hardware is used. Enjoy wearing it in, over time. Atelier-made.
